A cure for laziness? – Automate everything!
I have a confession to make – I am obsessed with automation.
There is something about making computers do all my work for me that I find incredibly satisfying. My waking thoughts are often directed towards a simple question “How can I get whatever I am doing done without me having to think about it all the time?”.
Productivity for the unproductive
I don’t care much for productivity for a simple reason – It takes up too much time!
Instead I value efficiency. I like nothing better than to sit around all day while things just take care of themselves. I guess I must be super lazy… though I don’t think I am the only one. I think evolution tends to move us towards laziness.
To this end, I don’t spend much time on the internet other than for looking for places of interest. If I find somewhere I grab the weblink and then stick it into a program on my webserver. This program aggregates the content from rss feeds or standard html webpages and then filters it according to my own personal likes and dislikes.
From there, anything that is to my liking is emailed to a special email account that I use specific to the purpose. All I need to do is fire up my mail app on my phone and read to my hearts content.
Think of how much time is wasted on the internet constantly searching all the time? I don’t want to be searching for things that interest me – I want the content to come to me and then be able to decide whether I like it or not.
I have a feeling that I may be ahead of the curve on this one. Perhaps in the future this is the way it will be for everyone. Instead of going out to find what we are looking for, we instead expend the effort on pruning and filtering out the content that’s out there. Let’s face it, there is no shortage of things to read, stuff to learn about or videos to see. 99.9999% of it is of no interest to me, and so I simply don’t want to find my eyes skimming over it.
I guess one thing I do know for sure though, I am a bit of an odditity with regard to the lengths I go to the get the right content, or more specifically to keep the wrong content out.
The are loads of tools out there to filter things for you – Facebooks ‘like’ feature for example. For me, I find myself trying out other peoples implementations and I typically find them to be inadequate.
There is a simple reason for this – the creator isn’t me.
